Federal Ruling Requires NYC Public Schools to Improve Access to Special Education Services

Securing every child’s right to education is key to a fair society and strong democracy. On July 19, a Manhattan federal judge issued a ruling that should help ensure that students with disabilities get access to the services and supports to which they are entitled under federal and state law. The court ordered the New York City Department of Education to take a number of specific steps to address chronic delays in complying with orders of hearing officers who determined that these students should be placed in non-public schools or should receive related services from private providers because appropriate services were not available for them in the public schools.
